Today’s Lesson: Cravings vs. Compulsions

I was teaching a workshop recently where a woman raised her hand with a question about how to control cravings.
As she described her experience to me, I noticed she wasn’t describing cravings… she was describing compulsions.
I see this confusion all the time, so I’m going to be your teacher today! Let’s dive into this important lesson: Cravings vs. Compulsions!
Let’s start with some classic definitions:
A craving is a strong desire for something.
A compulsion is an irresistible urge.
If you’ve ever felt powerless, “too weak”, or lacking willpower around food – these are characteristics of compulsions.
Many people will try the only method they know – control.
This can look like not buying certain foods or other methods of restriction such as fasting.
But controlling never brings the lasting freedom and peace you long for. Instead, controlling fuels the compulsive cycle.
But I have good news for you! There is another way of working with compulsions.
It’s a different approach… one that I take with all of my clients… and one that brings you home to yourself.
Instead of controlling them, you heal them.
This healing approach is about being curious rather than controlling.
With my help, you’ll move beyond seeing your compulsions as enemies needing to be conquered. Instead, you’ll learn how to utilize them as guides, teachers, and care instructions.
Through this work, you become more conscious, more compassionate, and an even more wise human being.
Instead of feeling compulsive and powerless, you move through your life with courage – you finally have the courage to go for that new stretch job, start dating again, work on your marriage, or pursue your passions!
Thanks for joining me for today’s lesson! 🙂

In service to your freedom,

P.S. Your healing impacts everyone around you too.
No longer fractured by your compulsions, you move through life fully present. You relate to your colleagues, family, and all the people you meet from a wiser, more compassionate place.
Then, no matter where you are or what is happening in life, you become a healing presence in this world. Which our world so desperately needs. 💖
