Hi: You aren’t going to believe this!

I recently spent a week studying with a Zen Buddhist monk and I was shocked to discover how much we have in common.

She told me about her experience the night of the 2016 presidential election, how she went to a gathering of friends outside of her Zen center. As a Buddhist monk, she keeps a very clean vegan diet.

She shared, “As I watched the election results roll in, completely horrified by what I was witnessing, I lost myself and dove into a plate of ribs and even had a few beers!”

This was when I fell off my chair in shock.

I could totally relate to what she was talking about, how she was so overwhelmed with her emotions, anxiety and fear that she lost herself with food!

This is exactly why I created the process that I now teach my clients called Digesting EmotionsTM because I needed a way to be able to manage, process and move through my emotions instead of putting food on top of them.

I'm coming out

It’s scary, to let everyone see the real you. But, hiding sucks and takes way more energy. So, I’m coming out.

Yep. That was the courageous decision I had to make when I so desperately desired to escape from emotional eating.

Up until that point, I was reeeeeally good at hiding it. I kept it a secret.

I covered my compulsive relationship with food with expensive clothes, beautiful makeup and burning off the perfect amount of calories.

The more I tried to hide my secret, the more weight I gained.

My body was secretly crying for help while I desperately tried to cover it up. But everyone could see… it was written all over me. 

That’s when I made a choice. A choice that changed everything.

I chose to tell my secret.

To one person, a stranger at the time…

To my surprise, that one conversation was a catalyst for deep healing and the beginning of my escape from emotional eating. 

Fast forward to today, where I am 100% free from my compulsions with food. Now food completely nourishes my body and soul and I am my ideal, healthy right- for-me weight.

I had it all wrong.

I thought that if I hired a private chef it would be my ticket to freedom from emotional eating. So when I finally did, I was shocked that it didn’t save me. Not. At. All…I had it all wrong.

I had my chef cook everything for me…breakfast, lunch, dinner…even snacks! Gluten and dairy free. The food was as clean as it could get.

I would finish dinner — cooked by my very own private chef! —and then I would get the PULL.

The PULL to the pantry.

The PULL to the chocolate.

The PULL to eat more (even though I was already physically full).

The PULL.


I knew better. But the PULL… I was a victim of this overwhelming force.

That’s when I realized food wasn’t my problem. It was my mind, my heart & my soul that needed help.

When I started to approach food differently and committed myself to healing from the inside out (instead of seeking superficial answers in clean eating), the PULL disappeared…as if it had been magically lifted out of my life.

My mind was clear, even peaceful. I was no longer cycling in a circus of crazy thoughts about food. Food shifted to being fuel… a nourishing asset to my soul.

From there, I could finally focus on things I was really passionate about, like helping other women Escape From Emotional EatingTM.

When I looked in the mirror and didn’t like what I saw

3 years ago I attended a retreat with my mentor and I was required to look in the metaphorical mirror at myself and I didn’t like what I saw.

She asked me to write down on a scale of 1-10 (10 being 100%) how committed I was.

My mind immediately jumped to write, “I’m a 10!”

Almost as quickly as I received the first answer, I also heard another soft, grounded voice say to me, “If you’re really a 10, then why aren’t you getting what you want? Especially with food and your body, Jessica?”

See, at that point I was 35 pounds heavier than I am now. I was living in a black hole of frustration, disappointment, and the deep belief that “there must be something wrong with me”.

When I honestly re-evaluated myself, I finally settled on a 5. My real answer stabbed me in the chest.

I had to face this heavy realization that my true inner desires did not match my external actions.

I truly desired to show up as a 10 in ALL areas of my life, but in reality I was only showing up as a 5.

In addition, I realized how every time I would eat and eat and eat till I went numb, I was abandoning my myself and my true desires.

Overcome with tears of truth, I shared what I was seeing with the group and said, “I’m not going home because it took me 2 cabs, 2 buses and a train to get here. So if I’m going to be here, I choose to be a 10.”

Was I scared? Absolutely!

Rightfully so because this was a HUGE turning point in my journey.

THIS was the catalyst that helped me fully heal my relationship with food and create a body of work to teach and support other women in doing the same.

I used to think that being fully committed to anything or anyone would feel like hell, but it has actually has brought me so much freedom! And miraculously, choosing to be a 10 eliminated many of my old self-sabotaging patterns.

This decision meant I was no longer able to be a victim in my life. I was the AUTHOR of it!

And this is the exact work that I do with my clients; I guide women to owning their own version being of a 10.

So, as your coach I have to ask you: on a scale of 1-10, how committed are you?

No right, no wrong, no judgment.

Simply a question… with an answer…

I found a lump

This summer I was rubbing in my sunscreen before going to the beach with friends when I discovered a large lump on my left breast. Immediately my gut wrenched, my heart dropped, and I shattered into a million pieces.

So if there’s one thing I learned in 2016, it’s the power of miracles.

A miracle, as defined by A Course In Miracles, is a shift in perception. It’s a shift from fear to love.

In the past, I used to think that miracles were limited…that I had to wait for my number to be called to receive one. I used to think that even if I asked for a miracle, God/the Universe would pass over me… so I often told myself, “what’s the point in even asking?”

I’ve experienced miracles in the past in dire situations. But I certainly didn’t want to make it a practice to risk my life just to experience a miracle!

So after this critical health scare, I decided to research the possibility of miracles…experiment…and find out for myself: Can I really live a miraculous life? One where I experience miracles on a daily basis?

What I discovered as the answer to that question is: 100%, absolutely, YES.

And what happened BLEW MY MIND.

Food, my body, money, work, relationships…nothing was off limits for a miracle. Even the seemingly small things like a craving to eat when I wasn’t really physically hungry…have all been graced by miracles…complete shifts from fear to love. 

From this, I’ve learned a deeper sense of safety in this overwhelming world. I’ve learned a deeper sense of trust, first in myself and then in the Universe. And finally, I’ve learned a new sense of ease, that I don’t have to micromanage my entire world…

All I have to do is to be willing to see things differently. And pray for a miracle. 

So, whatever is causing you pain right now…like if you’ve overeaten so much during the holidays that you have no idea how you’re going to crawl out of this dark hole, I invite you to pray for a miracle.

Let’s practice this together. Use my personal miracle prayer here to get you started…

“Dear God, Goddess, and all my angels and guides*. Please take this [insert your problem, anxiety, fear, etc.] from me. Please help me to see this differently.”

*adapt to reflect whatever language speaks to you
For me, saying this once was never enough because something in my mind would always hook back into the fear.

But after such a drastic health scare, I really learned why it’s so important to say this prayer over and over like an inner mantra.

This is exactly what is at the core of my work in helping women Escape From Emotional EatingTM. In order to be completely free from feeling compulsive and out of control with food, you need to call on something bigger and greater than yourself.

Because this journey is not just about your body, it’s also about your spirit.
